but honestly – if I left them with hope and tools, I fear it may be a false hope. If organizational leadership wants higher-leverage HR, they have to invest in it.

This is very true. So often people in and out of our community preach that you have to have buy-in, confidence, and strategy that aligns the HR function with the business. Some of the same people often do not understand, hold no empathy, or hold the courage to be honest about is this:

no matter how hard you try, how talented or knowlegdeable you are.. if the leadership does not support or help influence what you are trying to do... you will never be able to make an impact in a way that is warranted or wanted.

Either you accept that and move on, try harder to get there, or continue to be ignorant to that fact.

You will not always be strategic to an organization, but you can be strategic within the role you carry!
Thanks Franny!

I loved this, and especially, "don't fool themselves that privilege is the same as talent." As one of the scrappy guys who made his own way, I think this is an important point of view.

I grew up in New Orleans and lived in North Carolina for quite a few years. Throughout the south, I visited many Waffle House establishments. You can get whatever you wanted - scattered, smothered, diced, capped, flipped, flopped and shaken (but not stirred). Great memories. :)

Franny, that's so true. The hardscrabble hires always work out better. They know how to work and they know what it takes to get ahead.

Great article and very cool find. (I love Waffle House, too.)
